It’s a sweep for the New Mexico Junior College Women’s track team. After winning the 2017 National Junior College Athletic Association’s National Indoor Track Championship in March, the nation’s No.1-ranked Lady T-Birds claimed their first NJCAA National Outdoor Championship Saturday at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kan. The Lady T-Birds beat second-place Barton Community College 97 points to 83.5. Rounding out the top five finishes are third-place, and defending national champion, Iowa Central (71), Monroe College, N.Y. (68), and Central Arizona (65).
In the last meet before the NJCAA Outdoor Championships the #1 Ranked T-Birds continued to improve. The team set three school records, qualified five new events and improved and improved on four.
With just a few meets to go until the NJCAA Outdoor Championships the #1 ranked T-Birds just worked on a few events and rested a few athletes to try and just fine tune the team for the outdoor championships. Despite resting a few athletes and only competing others in one event the T-Birds still continued to improve.
Sophomore Latavia Coombs was recognized as the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week (April 18th) as well as the Hobbs News Sun Athlete of the Week (April 18th)
Latavia Coombs continues her impressive sophomore season. In front of the home crowd, Coombs won both the Triple Jump (44’6”) and the Long Jump (20’6 ½”).
Competing at the WT Classic and Multi in Canyon Texas, Latavia Coombs continued her torrid sophomore season by recording the top heptathlon mark in all of NJCAA Division I this year.
