Datilus’ Scoring Barrage Sinks Colts
Yanel Datilus scored a career-high 26 points in the Thunderbirds 99-60 win over University of Arkansas Cossatot on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Datilus had a near flawless game that saw him grab nine rebounds, go 8-for-8 from the free throw line, and 9-for-10 from the field with his lone miss coming from beyond the arc.
The T-Birds finished with a wire-to-wire win against the Colts in their final non-conference win of the season as they begin conference play Thursday, Jan. 8.
Garrison Phelps was the second T-Bird in double figures on Thursday with 10 points. Delang Muon, Xavier Perry, and Chouaybou Keita all ended the afternoon with nine points each.
"Really happy for Yanel to get a lot of playing time and also Chouaybou there," NMJC men's basketball head coach Luke Mackay said. "Those two guys have taken on a challenge coming from the other side of the world, not just learning a new game in terms of college basketball but learning new languages and new cultures. These guys are incredible kids."
The T-Birds shot 32-for-58 (55.2%) from the field, 8-of-30 (26.7%) from the 3-point line, and 27-of-36 (75%) from the free throw line. NMJC forced 20 turnovers and held the Colts to 34.6% from the field.
The No. 17 T-Birds move to 13-1 and start conference play in the new year against Western Texas College Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. MST in Hobbs, NM.
