The Thunderbirds opened the Region V Tournament with an upset-win over Vernon College in five sets on Thursday, Nov. 7.
The T-Birds led by two sets to start the match winning the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-17. The Chaps bounced back with a 25-18 win in the third set and a 25-23 win in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set.
NMJC began the final set with a 6-2 lead. Andjela Sojic expanded the lead to 11-5 with back-to-back kills from the right side. Vernon clawed back into the match within three points 13-10 but a tip kill from Leticia Neves and another from Zaira Romero won the match 15-10.
Middle Duda Tonella had a career day recording a career-high 11 kills and nine blocks in the five-set win.
Outside Andjela Sojic registered double-digit kills for the 17th time this season with 11 kills. Leticia Neves finished the day with 10 kills and seven digs.
Libero Sofie Caballero notched 18 digs and Ava Kincaid added 11 digs on the defensive side.
Both setters posted double-doubles on Thursday. Taina de Lima Nunes finished with 28 assists and 13 digs, while Sude Omerickoglu tallied 18 assists and 10 digs.
The T-Birds will play No. 1 NMMI in Roswell Friday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. MST.
