NMJC Sweeps Western Texas
The No. 10 New Mexico Junior College volleyball team beat Western Texas College in straight sets Wednesday night (25-23, 25-16, 25-21). The Thunderbirds have now won eight straight matches dating back to Sept. 24.
Outside hitter Iva Popovic led the T-Birds with 14 kills on the night. Popovic was named NJCAA Player of the Week Wednesday for her performance last week. Popovic registered 41 kills and 37 digs over the two-game span.
The T-Birds offense was evenly spread throughout the match with outside hitter Maggie Machado notching nine kills, middle blocker Karielys Maldonado finishing with eight kills, and outside hitter Giovana Costarelli adding six kills.
Setter Lacie Schooley recorded her team-leading 16th double-double of the season with 36 assists and 16 digs in the three-set win.
Defensive specialist Luiza Arsufi finished the night with a match-high 19 digs, while libero Milena Cernjanski chipped in 18 digs.
No. 10 NMJC will play Clarendon College in Clarendon, Texas Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. CDT.
