The T-Birds had a busy weekend with two separate meets in Kansas this weekend. The T-Birds opened up the weekend on Friday at the University of Kansas- Jayhawk Classic. Latavia Coombs continued her great season by winning the pentathlon. Her point total of 3429 sets her first in the NJCAA and should easily qualifier for the event for the NJCAA National Indoor Meet (Top 16 best scores will get in). Also at the Jayhawk Classic the T-Birds had 3 new national qualifying marks. Rochelle Frazer hit the mark in the weight throw with a toss of 49'2 ¼". The 1000M was a dominate event for the T-Birds as Teresha Jacobs wins the AM section in a NJCAA qualifying time of 3:10.10, later that night in the PM section Esther Gitahi won again in a national leading and new school record time of 2:52.04.
On Saturday the T-Birds competed at the Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, KS. "The main purpose of the meet was to get a feel for the track that will host the national championships on March 3rd and 4th". The T-Birds did more than just feel it out, they rose to the top. The team was led by the short sprinters in particular- Krystal Sparling and Shian Hyde. These two young ladies were very impressive in the 60M. Both progressed through the rounds with times improving each race. The duo finished 1st and 2nd in the final. Sparling won in a meet record time of 7.39, Hyde 2nd in a time of 7.45. Sparling's time was also a school record and sets her number one in the NJCAA.
