NMJC (W-Golf) Finishes 3rd at Home Tournament
The T-Bird women's golf program hosted the Thunderbird Invitational at Rockwind Community Links where they finished in third place on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Odessa College shot 43-over to win the tournament. Weatherford College was runner-up at 55-over. NMJC shot 309-325 over the course of 36 holes to finish in third place at 58-over. Danique Stokmans of Texas Tech won the tournament individually at 4-over par.
The T-Birds and the competition did have to deal with blustery conditions on Day 2 that led to some higher scores being shot across the field.
Freshman Tova Sandren was the top finisher for the second consecutive tournament. The freshman led the tournament outright after the first round following her even-par 72.
Sandren shot a 6-over 78 in the final round to post 6-over for the tournament and finish in third place. The Halmstad, Sweden native led the field in par-4 scoring at 1-over and was second in the field in birdies with seven.
Megan Dawson shot 78-80 in her two rounds this week. The freshman was T-13 ending her tournament at 14-over. Dawson was fourth in par-5 scoring at 1-under par.
Sophie Brothwood had a great opening round shooting a 3-over 75 on Day 1. Brothwood's second round was tough in the wind as she shot 85. The freshman finished at 16-over and tied for 16th place. Brothwood was fifth in par-5 scoring at even par and was one of four players in the tournament to eagle a hole.
Ella Cornwell shot 82-84 in her two rounds in Hobbs, NM this week. The freshman finished T-24 at 22-over par. Cornwell joined her teammate Brothwood as one of four players who made an eagle at the event.
Dear Phermthongmak had a tough week out on the course shooting 84-89 over 36 holes. The freshman from Thailand finished T-35 at 29-over and was the fifth and final member counting toward the team score.
Now over to the individuals for NMJC at Rockwind.
Ronja Nordell had a great week out on the course opening with a 3-over 75. Her second round saw the Swede shoot 80 on her way to a T-7 finish at 11-over. Ronja carded five birdies in her opening round and finished with seven birdies for the week which was T-2 with her teammate and fellow countrywoman Sandren. Nordell finished T-5 in par-5 scoring at even par alongside Sandren.
Sophomore Giuliana Frutos shot 79-82 in 36 holes at Rockwind. The sophomore finished at 17-over and in solo 18th place.
Stefany Crozier shot back-to-back 83s in her two rounds at the Thunderbird Invitational. The sophomore led the field in par-3 scoring at even par. Crozier posted a 22-over for the tournament and finished tied for 24th place.
Chase Fields opened Round 1 with an 11-over 83 and shot a 14-over 86 in Round 2. The sophomore ended her tournament T-29 at 25-over.
Sophomore Jordyn Cruz started her Thunderbird Invitational with a 12-over 84. In Round 2, she shot 89 to finish T-35 at 29-over.
Zoe Munoz was the final T-Bird out on the course. The sophomore shot 95-91 to finish in 47th place at 42-over par.
The Thunderbirds next event is the Top of Texas Invitational in Amarillo, Texas March 9-10 at the La Paloma GC.
