NMJC (W-Golf) Starts Spring with 7th-Place Finish at Islander Classic
The Thunderbirds began the spring with a seventh-place finish at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Houston Christian shot 38-over to win the tournament. Blinn College was top JUCO in the field finishing in fourth place at 57-over. Elsa Tornvall of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the tournament individually at 5-over par.
The Thunderbirds shot 92-over (316-321-319) to finish as the No. 2 JUCO team at the tournament.
Freshman Tova Sandren was the top player for NMJC this week at 15-over. The sophomore shot 76-78-77 to finish in a tie for 14th place. Sandren finished three shots behind the tournament's top junior college individual Aaliyah Hryniewiecka-Irwin of McLennan.
Sophie Brothwood opened with a first-round 6-over 78 and followed up with an 8-over 80 in Round 2. The freshman final-round 78 featured two birdies as she closed the tournament in a tie for 24th place at 20-over.
Sophomore Stefany Crozier-Hunt turned in an 82-79-83 54-hole score this week. The Englishwoman shot 28-over for the tournament to finish T-37.
Giuliana Frutos started with an 8-over 80 in Round 1. She had a tough go in Rounds 2 and 3 shooting 85-84 to place T-45 at 33-over.
Ella Cornwell struggled in her first two rounds shooting 87-84 before carding a 9-over 81 in the final round. The freshman placed T-50 at 36-over par.
Sophomore Jordyn Cruz was the lone individual for NMJC this week. Cruz went 85-78 in her first two rounds of play. Tuesday was not ideal and in the final round she turned in an 89 to place T-50 at 36-over par.
The Thunderbirds next event is the Thunderbird Invitational at Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs, NM Feb. 23-24.
