No. 15 T-Bird (WBB) Downs No. 10 SPC for 2nd Time
The T-Birds swept South Plains in the season series with a narrow 71-67 win over the Texans on Thursday, Feb. 19.
NMJC previously won on the road 81-74 against then No. 1 SPC on Monday, Jan. 19.
The Thunderbirds ended the first quarter with a 14-12 lead. South Plains went ahead in the second quarter 23-18 with just under 5:00 to play. The T-Birds had a nice 13-2 run to end the half, grabbing a 31-25 advantage.
NMJC pushed the lead to as many as nine points in the third quarter ending the quarter in front 51-46. SPC took their first lead of the second half, 57-56, with 5:26 left in the game. The T-Birds went into the final minute in front 67-64. SPC cut the lead to one point, 67-66, with 46 second left.
A clutch layup by Caitlin Wilson via a beautiful pass from Luisa Amaral gave NMJC the 3-point lead again, 69-66. SPC had a couple chances to tie the game but couldn't connect as NMJC held on to win 71-67.
Jada Graves recorded 23 points while dishing out five assists. Graves has scored 20 or more points in 11 of her 25 games this year.
Sophomore Kaycee Steinke knocked down three triples to finish with 12 points. Zarai Lewis also hit three shots from beyond the arc registering 11 points and eight rebounds.
Madison Wilson finished with a double-double scoring 10 points and recording a career-high 18 rebounds. Azaleeah Oloapu registered 10 points and six rebounds.
The T-Birds shot 26-for-73 (35.6%) from the field, 8-of-24 (33.3%) from the 3-point line, and 11-of-21 (52.4%) from the charity stripe. NMJC forced 16 turnovers and held the Texans to 41.2% from the field.
The T-Birds (7-4) are tied for third in the WJCAC standings with South Plains (7-4), trailing Howard (9-1), and Clarendon 10-0.
The No. 15 Thunderbirds move to 20-5 (7-4) on the year and will face Midland College in Midland, Texas Monday, Feb. 23 at 5:45 p.m. CST.
