NMJC women's basketball defeated Northeastern Junior College for the second time this season 87-76.
Round 2 of the T-Birds versus Plainsmen was far closer than their first game in Colorado where NMJC smoked NJC 86-41 over the Thanksgiving break.
The T-Birds led in the first quarter 17-16 with under 1:30 to go in the quarter and ended the first ahead 22-18.
The second quarter was all Zarai Lewis. The sophomore guard was perfect, going 3-for-3 from the 3-point line and 4-for-4 from the field to register 11 points in the frame. The T-Birds led at the half 50-36.
NMJC was outscored in both quarters in the second half, but they still held on to win by 11 points, 87-76.
Zarai Lewis dropped a career-high 23 points knocking down 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc. She also added six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Jada Graves recorded a double-double finishing with 23 points and 10 assists. Luisa Amaral ended the afternoon with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The T-Birds shot 29-for-69 (42%) from the field, 9-of-27 (33.3%) from the 3-point line, and 20-of-33 (60.6%) from the stripe. NMJC forced 17 turnovers.
The No. 10 Thunderbirds improve to 11-1 on the year and will face McCook Community College in Hobbs, NM Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. MST.
