LUBBOCK, Texas –
Shaniya Mitchell poured in a game-high 17 points, and fourth-seeded New Mexico Junior College picked up a second round win of the NJCAA Women's Basketball National Championship as they defeated Northeast Oklahoma A&M 61-59 at the Rip Griffin Center.
Dezirae Hampton scored 13 points while Ekatarina Zhibareva came in off the bench and was a force down low as she added 10 points.
Freshman point guard Ashley Perez turned in a career high nine assists filling in for injured point guard Alana da Silva. Perez stepped in and played her best game as a Thunderbird.
The Thunderbirds dominated the glass and out rebounding the Norse 55-33. Nycolle Smith grabbed a game high nine boards followed by Mitchell with eight and Camille Mills and Hampton each with seven.
The Thunderbirds (31-2) advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow at 4:00pm MST vs. the College of Southern Idaho.
