Defense dominant in win over WTC
Snyder, TEXAS
The New Mexico Junior College Women's Basketball team used stifling defense to out dual Western Texas defeating them by 35 points in a 57-22 victory.
The defense was superb as they held the Westerners to 8-for-54 field goals which included 2-for-21 from behind the arc. After giving up nine points in the first quarter, the Thunderbirds turned it up a notch in the second allowing two free-throws with less than three seconds remaining and led 24-11 at the break.
The second half was much the same as the Westerners could only muster another 11 points. All the missed shots allowed NMJC to outrebound WTC 51-35.
Alana da Silva led the offensive charge scoring 10 points. Every Thunderbird that played scored in the lopsided affair as the bench outscored the Westerners 34-22.
Shaniya Mitchell collected a game high eight rebounds.
Next up for the Thunderbirds will be South Plains College for Homecoming on February 8th at Caster Activity Center. South Plains is fighting for the fourth position in the WJCAC at 4-5 in league play. NMJC will be taking part in the WBCA Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing pink warm-ups and socks. A t-shirt fundraiser is being conducted with all proceeds being donated to the Kay Yow foundation which has raised 5.18 million dollars to date for cancer research
