Tbirds open second half of season by upending Otero; 74-66
Hobbs, NEW MEXICO
The New Mexico Junior College women's basketball team began the second half of their season with a win over an upstart Otero CC, 74-66.
Shaniya Mitchell came in off the bench to score 17 points and grab seven rebounds in only 20 minutes of action. Alana da Silva pumped in 14 points and Daiane Machado added 11 points and seven rebounds as well.
Otero knocked off Odessa CC on Friday night 82-69 behind some solid shooting but the Thunderbirds defense was too much for the Rattlers. The Thunderbirds forced 20 Rattler turnovers, 11 of them by steal and turned those into 21 points. The Thunderbirds out rebounded Otero 41-25 and were led by Ekatarina Zhibareva with 10 rebounds.
The Thunderbirds were dominate in all facets of the game as they outscored the Rattlers 32-14 in the paint and the bench outscored the Otero Bench 41-13.
Next up for the Thunderbirds is conference foe South Plains on Saturday, January 9 in Levelland, Texas at 1:00 P.M. CST. The Thunderbirds will enter the contest 15-2, 2-0 in WJCAC play. The Lady Texans will enter the contest 13-5, 1-1.
