Thunderbirds fly past Southwest Texas Junior College
Snyder, TEXAS (November 20, 2015)
On Friday, the New Mexico Junior College Women's Basketball team did what no other team in the history of the program had done. They held their opponent, Southwest Texas Junior College, to one point in the second half, blanking the cowgirls in the third period and eventually winning 105-12.
Freshman, Kate Ekatarina Zhibareva posted her first career double-double as she led the Thunderbirds with 11 boards and tied for a team high and game high 15 points with fellow freshman, Shaniya Mitchell. Alexis Winters came off the bench to score 14 points.
The Thunderbirds were impressive for the second night in a row sharing the ball as they assisted on 33 of their 44 field goals. Every player had at least one assist on the night. Equally impressive was the fact that they only turned the ball over, a season low, six times.
Defensively, the Thunderbirds had 22 steals to go along with 56 rebounds. Shannon Powell led the Thunderbirds with four steals.
The Thunderbirds close out their trip to Snyder tomorrow afternoon when they play Dallas Diesel, a team made up of former collegiate players.
