No. 9 Tbirds cruise past Texas Storm
Hobbs, NEW MEXICO (November 1, 2015) –
The New Mexico Junior College Women's Basketball team bounced back from Saturday's defeat to down Texas Storm 86-68 in the Tate Branch Dodge Classic at Caster Activity Center.
The Thunderbirds (2-1, 0-0) lead wire-to-wire as they raced out to a 26-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The Storm battled back and trailed by three, 36-33 at halftime. Alana da Silva and Blair Richmond paced the Thunderbirds scoring 13 points apiece. Ekatarina (Kate) Zhibareva added 12 points and Shannon Powell chipped in 10 points both coming off the bench. The Thunderbirds reserves outscored the Storm reserves 51-16.
Nycolle Smith turned in another solid performance just missing a second consecutive double-double as she had 8 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, the Thunderbirds out rebounded the Storm 40-31 and assisted on 24 of the 32 field goals.
The Thunderbirds will turn into road warriors as they spend the next month on the road. They will be at the South Plains Classic on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 5:00 P.M. CST as they take on Southwestern Christian College in Levelland, TX. Their next home action will be on Saturday, December 5, 2015 against Western Texas College.
