NMJC Thunderbirds Help Speak Out Against Domestic Violence

Women's Basketball student-athletes give back

Hobbs, NEW MEXICO -

 

Though October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, advocates at Option, Inc., the Lea County domestic violence shelter, wanted to begin its campaign early.  They called the Thunderbirds Women's Basketball team at New Mexico Junior College and asked for help. The team happily volunteered, and set up a basketball shooting contest at the Option, Inc. booth at the United Way Chili Cook Off event September 26th.  Members of the Thunderbirds also worked the booth, handing out materials about domestic violence.

"We would like to thank Robert Guthrie and his co-workers at Option, Inc. for allowing us to aid in their quest to bring attention to the issue of Domestic Violence," says Drew Sanders, head coach of the NMJC women's basketball team. "It is a problem in today's society that we all have seen and some have experienced firsthand. It was a privilege to be able to help in a small way, and I thank the women of our team for taking time out of their Saturday to assist with this worthwhile experience."

"There are some really special kids on the Thunderbirds team," says Robert Guthrie, Operations Manager of Option, Inc.  "The T-Birds helped us by manning the table and talking to folks as well as running a basketball shooting contest.  We appreciate the team's enthusiasm and willingness to support our organization."

 Option, Inc. has been serving Lea County for 37 years.  Its goal is to prevent future domestic violence between adults and reduce the incidence of battery and assault.
