NMJC (M-T&F) Adds 4 New Qualifiers in Lubbock
The NMJC men's track & field team competed at the Masked Rider Open April 3 in Lubbock, Texas.
The meet was moved up a few days due to inclement weather in the forecast.
NMJC finished Thursday with one school record, two improved qualifiers, and four new national qualifiers.
Mawali Osunniyi high jumped his way to an outdoor improved qualifying leap of 2.07m to break the school record of 1.95m set by Che Saunders in 2022. Osunniyi is ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA for the high jump based off his indoor leap of 2.17m.
Freshman Abdelkader Gardam was an improved qualifier in the discus with a throw of 51.41m (NJCAA No. 8).
Moving over to the track side.
Bovel McPherson blew away the competition in Lubbock coming across the line in 45.30 in the 400m. The finish is No. 12 all-time for the NJCAA and is No. 1 in the 400m by .43 seconds.
Freshman Benjamin Nsiah ran a 46.64 in the 400m Thursday to qualify for nationals in the outdoor season (NJCAA No. 6). David Nyamufarira's 21.08 qualified the Zimbabwean in the 200m. Nyamufarira's No. 10 rank is based on his 20.91 he ran at indoor nationals. Ezekiel Newton met the national standard in the 200m as well with a time of 21.11 (NJCAA No. 22).
NMJC stays ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA for the outdoor season according to the new rankings released by the USTFCCCA.
The T-Birds next competition is the Jo Meeker Classic & Multi in Canyon, Texas April 10-12.
