T-Bird (MBB) Holds Off NMMI
NMJC fought off a late charge by in-state foe New Mexico Military Institute to take down the Broncos 71-63 on Thursday, Jan. 29.
NMMI was off to a great start in the first five minutes of play, leading NMJC 14-5. The Thunderbirds responded with an 18-3 run to grab a 23-17 advantage with 7:02 left in the first half. A three-pointer by NMMI just prior to the horn brought the T-Birds double-digit lead down to 33-25 at half.
NMJC was ahead for most of the second half and even led by 17 points, 64-47, with under 6:00 minutes left in the game. The Broncos caught fire and went on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to one possession, 64-61, with 2:30 to go. NMJC held on 71-63 despite missing five straight free throws in the final 27 seconds of the game.
RJ Nance finished with a team-high 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Forward Delang Muon recorded 12 points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Xavier Perry came off the bench and made three triples to finish with nine points. Grigorije Avramovic ended the night with eight points and eight rebounds in the win over the Broncos.
The T-Birds shot 25-for-62 (40.3%) from the field, 11-of-40 (27.5%) from the 3-point line, and 10-of-24 (41.7%) from the free throw line. NMJC forced 26 turnovers.
The Thunderbirds improve to 17-4 (4-3) on the year and will face Odessa College in Odessa, Texas Monday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. CST.
