The Thunderbirds dropped their second conference game of the season to Odessa College Monday night 72-68.
Odessa led for the majority of the game, but NMJC was within reach for nearly the entire evening. The Wranglers largest lead of the game was nine points, 62-53, with 5:25 left in the game. A Jayden Spearman 3-pointer brought the Thunderbirds within a possession 65-63 at the 3:16 mark.
The Thunderbirds could not close the gap and were unable to have the ball in their hands with a shot to tie or take the lead. A Deuce Benjamin triple with 2.8 seconds to go made the score 70–68 but Odessa knocked down two free throws to ice the game and win by four points.
Wing Isaiah Alexander recorded 16 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Deuce Benjamin finished with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The T-Birds shot 20-for-54 (37.0%) from the field, 6-of-25 (24.0%) from the 3-point line, and 22-of-37 (59.5%) from the free throw line. The Thunderbirds forced 20 turnovers and held the Wranglers to 25% from three-point land.
The No. 5 Thunderbirds drop to 15-2 (1-2) and will face No. 14 Howard College 14-3 (2-1) in Hobbs, NM on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. MST.
