T-Birds Beat NMMI in Overtime
The NMJC T-Birds played against the NMMI Broncos Thursday night in Caster Activity Center for their fifth conference match up. The T-Birds won in overtime against the Broncos.
Six lead changes throughout the first half made it a tight game for the two teams. Sophomore Devin Butts sinked in two 3-pointers for the T-Birds while freshman Mouhamed Mbaye put up 11 points, 7 of those being freethrows. The T-Birds went into half time ahead of the Broncos by just one point, 34-33.
The Broncos made three turnovers within the first 2 minutes of the second half giving the T-Birds a chance to maintain their lead. Latik Murphy shot a 3-pointer for the Broncos putting them ahead of the T-Birds 43-41 with 14 minutes left in the game. The T-Birds trailed the Broncos for several minutes allowing them to get a larger lead. The Broncos were up 68-65 with only one minute remaining. After a foul by freshman Josaphat Bilau, NMMI shot a free throw putting the score at 69-65 with 35 seconds left in the game. Mouhamed Mbaye made a layup making it a 2-point game. After one more freethrow from the Broncos, the T-Birds were down three with only 5 seconds left. Freshman Dario Domingos rebounded NMMI's second free throw to assist sophomore Tommy Chatman who made a 3-pointer at the buzzer tieing the game 70-70.
The T-Birds did not allow the Broncos to get another lead. Sophomore Jordan Booker scored 12 points, 8 of those being free throws. The Broncos were outscored 12-7 in overtime, the T-Birds beat the Broncos with a final score of 82-77. The T-Birds are now 3-2 in conference play.
Top scorers for the T-Birds were Jordan Booker with 26 points, Mouhamed Mbaye with 25 points, and Devin Butts with 16 points. Tommy Chatman scored 9 points and had 2 steals followed by Dario Domingos who finsihed the game with 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Next up for the T-Birds are the Howard College Hawks on Monday, January 17th at 7:30PM MST at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum in Big Spring, TX.
