Franklyn Penn Jr. had a big week for the New Mexico Junior College men's basketball team as he helped the Thunderbirds to a road win over Eastfield and then a Western Junior College Athletic Conference win over Western Texas.

On Monday, January 8, Penn Jr. scored a team-high 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block as the Thunderbirds beat Eastfield 91-79.

Three days later, the Thunderbirds returned home for a WJCAC game against Western Texas. The home win was the ninth straight for the Thunderbirds. While NMJC started out hot, building up a 30-point lead, Penn Jr. and the Thunderbirds had to hold on to beat the Westerners 78-76. Penn Jr. had 12 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one assist in the win.

Following the two wins, NMJC improved to 13-4 on the season and 2-1 in WJCAC play.
