Blount leads Thunderbirds past USW JV
Hobbs, NEW MEXICO (November 20, 2105)
For the third time in their past five games, the New Mexico Junior College Men's Basketball team met up with not only a familiar opponent, but their across the street neighbor, University of the Southwest JV. For the third time, the Thunderbirds defeated the Mustangs, this time by a score of 114-62.
The defensive energy and effort led the charge as the Thunderbirds held USW JV to 27.6% shooting and forced 17 Mustang turnovers while outscoring them 31-11 in points off turnovers. Devin Wyatt had 10 rebounds to go along with six points and two blocks.
Tyler Blount found his groove again, returning to the friendly confines of Caster Activity Center going 6-for-10 from downtown. After struggling to shoot the ball last weekend, Blount led four Thunderbirds in double digit scoring as the sophomore poured in 20 points and a team high six assists.
Randy Haynes scored 17 points in 14 minutes of action. Nnamdi Okoro turned in his best game as a Thunderbird as he scored 15 points and added eight caroms. Rounding out the double digit scorers for the Thunderbirds was Emmanuel Ansah as he had 12 points to go along with seven rebounds.
The Thunderbirds bench outscored the Mustangs 57-17 and dominated the paint, outscoring them 46-18.
Up next for NMJC is Planet Athlete, who fell to Odessa College 141-75 earlier in the day.
