The Thunderbirds split their doubleheader on Friday with a loss to No. 14 Iowa Western and a win against host No. 6 McLennan CC.
Game 1
NMJC baseball gave up 18 unanswered runs in a 19-8 loss to No. 14 Iowa Western on Friday, Feb. 6.
Iowa Western and the T-Birds exchanged a run apiece in the first inning. The Thunderbirds blew it open in the third inning scoring seven runs to grab a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Reivers added a run in the third and four runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 8-6. Iowa Western buried NMJC in the sixth inning with 11 runs and added two more runs in the seventh to take down NMJC 19-6 in seven innings.
Ricardo Rojas went four innings allowing six runs with just one earned while striking out six. Brandon Stewart picked up the loss for NMJC going 1.2 innings allowing seven runs.
Jesus Mejias went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, and a run scored. Callan Warren and Roman Trinidad both added doubles and an RBI.
The T-Birds recorded five hits and five walks in the loss.
Game 2
NMJC baseball upset No. 6 McLennan 6-4 in Game 2 on Friday, Feb. 6.
McLennan and NMJC traded runs in the second and third innings leaving the score at 2-2.
Javier Diaz gave the Thunderbirds the 3-2 lead in the fifth with a solo homer to left field. The Highlanders scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead 4-3. Shortstop Talan Barraza doubled in a run in the sixth inning to tie the game again at 4-4.
The T-Birds scored a run off of an error and another run via a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the eighth inning to grab a 6-4 advantage. Paul Medina came in relief for NMJC and went two innings and allowed no hits to pick up his first save of the year.
Sergio Lugo started for the T-Birds going four innings. He struck out five batters, allowed two earned runs and five hits. Hersy Felix earned the win in two innings of work recording four strikeouts.
Third baseman Javier Diaz was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBIs. Roman Trinidad batted 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Talan Barraza went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
The T-Birds move to 2-4 on the year after finishing Friday with nine hits and no errors.
