7 NMJC (W-T&F) Members Improve on National Standard in Waco
The Thunderbird women's track & field team competed at the Michael Johnson Invitational April 18-19 in Waco, Texas.
The T-Birds finished the meet with seven improved qualifiers and two new national qualifiers.
Sophomore sprinter Nandy Kihuyu improved on her 400m national qualifying time by .77 seconds with a 53.23 in the 400m. Kihuyu moves into the No. 3 spot in the NJCAA.
Jody Ann Mitchell ran a 4:36.85 in the 1500m to qualify for nationals in the race (NJCAA No. 9). Francesca Alvarado improved on her previous qualifying time in the 1500m as well with her 4:42.16 to move to No. 18 in the NJCAA. Alvarado also improved by 27.75 seconds on her national qualifying time in the steeplechase where she ran an 11:12.25 (NJCAA No. 6).
Sophomore Emilly Silva reached the national standard in the 1500m coming across the line in 4:50.33 to rank No. 35 in the NJCAA.
Ines Mrabet was an improved qualifier in the 5000m by 7.50 seconds with a time of 17:48.69 (NJCAA No. 22). Lisel Ndlovu was the other improved qualifier finishing in 18:28.87 to better her time by 6.37 seconds and rank No. 45 in JUCO.
Ysanne Peart slightly improved on her national standard by .04 seconds in the 400mH to post a 1:02.92 time. The finish is No. 8 in the NJCAA for the event.
The 4x100m relay squad of Maliah Edwards, Tuwana McLean, Amari Pratt, and Nandy Kihuyu were improved qualifiers in the race by .21 seconds with a time of 45.67 (NJCAA No. 7).
The Thunderbirds have the week off before they race again at the Texas Tech Corky Shootout in Lubbock, Texas May 2-3.
