T-Bird (W-Track) Picks Up 8 New National Qualifiers in Canyon
The NMJC women's track & field team competed at the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi April 10-12 in Canyon, Texas.
The T-Birds finished Saturday with five improved qualifiers and eight new national qualifiers.
Sophomore hurdler Maliah Edwards improved on her 100mH qualifying time by .24 seconds with a finish of 13.74 to move into the No. 2 slot in the NJCAA for the event.
Nandy Kihuyu nationally qualified in the outdoor 400m with a time of 54.75. The sophomore is ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA based off her indoor nationals finish of 54.00. Ysanne Peart improved on her national standard in the 400mH by 1.14 seconds with a finish of 1:02.96. The sophomore comes in at No. 5 in the NJCAA for the event.
Sophomore Amari Pratt qualified for nationals with a 11.63 in the 100m to rank No. 14 in JUCO for the race. Nalicia Glen ran in the 100m as well, recording an 11.85 to sit No. 26 in the NJCAA for the event.
Sophomore Daphne Kausz finished with a 2:18.15 in the 800m to rank No. 22 in the NJCAA.
Now over to the field side.
Sofia Mosquera Rodriquez was an outdoor improved national qualifier in the triple jump with a leap of 12.07m. Mosquera Rodriquez is ranked No. 3 in the triple based off her indoor 12.35m performance. Janita Antipina matched the qualifying jump of Mosquera Rodriquez at 12.07m to move into No. 6 in the NJCAA for the event. Kavel Ritchie slid into the No. 5 spot in the NJCAA with her long jump of 5.98m to improve on her previous national mark by .17m.
Yosiris Cordoba threw a national qualifying mark of 13.27m to move into the No. 10 spot in the NJCAA for the shot put.
Esteisy Salas-Lozano and Athilia Pryce both exceeded the national standard in hammer throw in Canyon. Salas-Lozano threw 45.28m to rank No. 10 in the NJCAA and Pryce was right behind her at 45.08m (NJCAA No. 11).
The 4x400m relay squad of Tuwana McLean, Ysanne Peart, Amari Pratt, and Nandy Kihuyu finished the mile relay in 3:39.92 to improve on their national qualifying time by 11.49 seconds (NJCAA No. 2).
NMJC is still ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA for the outdoor season according to the Checkpoint 3 rankings released by the USTFCCCA.
The Thunderbirds next meet is the Michael Johnson Invite in Waco, Texas April 18-19.
