NMJC opens season with strong performances at Texas Tech
Lady T-Birds qualify 10 for nationals at first indoor meet
LUBBOCK, Texas — The New Mexico Junior College women's track team opened the indoor season with a strong effort at the Texas Tech Open on Friday and Saturday in Lubbock, qualifying 10 for nationals while also having a student-athlete set a school record.
Sophomore Gleneve Grange set the Lady Thunderbird record in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, 9 inches – which was also good for a national qualifying mark.
NMJC freshman Jahneya Mitchell had her hand in three national qualifying times. Mitchell qualified as an individual in the 400 (59.01) while also helping the distance medley relay team of Tanui, Williams and Murray (13:24.05) and the 4x400 team of Newkirk, Garcia and Hoerr (3:57.45) qualify.
Also qualifying for nationals was Tiffany Garcia in the 400 (58.98), Cheyenne Hoerr in the 600 yards (1:28.21), Jourdan Doffeny (8.43) and
The Lady Thunderbirds next compete at the University of New Mexico on Jan. 24. Markita Rush (8.58) in the 55 hurdles, Kelsey Shannon in the high jump (5-3 1/4) and Micayla Collins in the triple jump (36-5 1/2).
