Urbantke Wins 2nd Straight Breakaway Title at WT A&M
Kadey Urbantke won breakaway roping title for the second straight week pushing herself into the No. 2 spot in the Caprock Region at the WT A&M Rodeo on Saturday, April 18.
Urbantke picked up where she left off last week winning the Long Round in the breakaway with a 2.5 second run to earn 60 points. She tied for second in the Short Round registering a time of 3.4 seconds for an additional 45 points. Urbantke edged the competition in the average by .10 seconds to win the rodeo and another 60 points.
The sophomore notched 165 points this week in Hereford, Texas to slide into the No. 2 spot in the Caprock Region standings with 355 points. The top-3 finishers in the region automatically qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming.
"Kadey has been roping smart," NMJC women's rodeo head coach Alexa Wilcox said. "The last two years of effort and persistence is paying off to be what we are seeing now. I'm beyond proud of the progress she's made in scoring and excited to see how this weekend goes."
Madi Stanley made the Short Round for the first time this semester, tying for sixth place in the Long Round with a run of 2.9 seconds. She was fourth in the Short Round with a 4.1 second finish. Stanley earned 3.33 points in the Long Round, 30 points in the Short Round, and 30 more points in the average for a total of 63.33 points this week.
"Madi has had some horse trouble, but she and Bucky were able to get it figured out this weekend," Coach Wilcox said. "She's a strong roper and you can never count her out. She has been putting in the time as well to give herself the best opportunities to win."
Stanley is seventh in the Caprock Region standings for the breakaway with 243.3 points and is 82 points back of second place.
Quincy Montoya tied for second place in the Long Round of the goat tying with a time of 7.5 seconds. She earned 45 points due to the finish. Montoya had an unfortunate tumble off her horse in the short go, but she still tied the goat in 10.8 seconds to finish sixth with 10 points. Montoya ended the rodeo sixth in the average for an additional 10 points. She finished Saturday with 65 points and is still No. 1 in the all-around standings for the Caprock Region with 680 points.
The women's team of Kadey Urbantke and Quincy Montoya scored 230 points at the WT A&M Rodeo.
The Thunderbirds have one rodeo remaining in the regular season as the team looks to solidify some spots with a top-3 finish in the Caprock Region. The automatic qualifiers will compete at the National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming starting Monday, June 15.
The T-Birds are in fourth place in the women's team standings of the Caprock Region with 1,068.33 points and are 240.33 points back of third place Eastern New Mexico.
"I'm proud of this team and excited for the weekend ahead," Coach Wilcox said. "They're performing at the level we expect, and I know that will continue."
NMJC will head to the final rodeo of the year at the SPC Rodeo in Levelland, Texas April 23-25.
