Women’s Rodeo Closes Season Strong in Stephenville, Gonzalez and Hatley Qualify for Casper
The Thunderbirds closed the regular season this week at the Tarleton Stampede in Stephenville, Texas with two members of the women's team making it to the Short Round.
Quincy Montoya finished fourth in the Long Round with a 6.5 second run to record 20 points in the goat tying. Montoya followed up that performance with a 6.3 second Short Round. She picked up 30 more points to finish T-4 in average and earn an additional 25 points for a total of 75 points.
"I was excited to have Quincy translate all of her hard work and good practice runs into her rodeo performance," NMJC women's rodeo head coach Alexa Wilcox said. "She has tied at the level all year but has made some small mistakes in competition that kept her from proving herself. She finally broke the ice, and I couldn't have been happier."
Barrel racer Taci Flinn posted a 15.98 to place fifth in the Long Round earning 20 points. Flinn recorded a 16 second short round to finish T-7 in the average with a 31.98.
"The girls had a good showing in Stephenville," Coach Wilcox said. "I was really proud to see Taci hang with them once again when we've known she and Reddy could do it all along. They put together two really good runs, and I think we all were proud of that."
The women's team finished with 95 points in the final rodeo of the year. The T-Birds upped their team total to 265 points to finish 10th overall in the Southwest Region.
"The last rodeo built great momentum for the team to come back to in the fall. I am very excited about the talent and work ethic in next year's team and the leaders we have in those returning," Coach Wilcox said. "I have high expectations of them, and I know they do, too. We will be looking forward to and working towards those."
Now over to the men's team. The T-Birds ended their Southwest Region campaign in 11th place with 935 points.
Team ropers Lyvan Gonzalez and Cason Hatley were unable to make it to the Short Round in Stephenville, but they held onto third place in the Southwest Region team roping standings to earn the coveted top 3 qualifying spot.
The pair will head to Casper, Wyoming for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) June 16-21. For more info on the pair click here.
