Bio
Jake McCarter is entering his 5th season as the assistant at New Mexico Junior College. McCarter mainly oversees the pitching where he has established many great pitching staffs throughout his time here. Throughout his previous four seasons at NMJC he has had three Conference Pitchers of the Year, along with the highest draft pick in NMJC history Nick Pivetta. Also, McCarter was named the Interim Head Coach last spring leading the Thunderbirds to a record of 39-21 and a conference record of 27-9.Prior to his coaching career, McCarter grew up in Kerrville, TX where he stood out at Tivy High School in both football and baseball. In 2003, out of high school, McCarter was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 40th round of the MLB draft.McCarter opted out and decided to attend Navarro College in Corsicana, TX under head coach Skip Johnson. Johnson, who is now the pitching coach for University of Oklahoma, is known as one of the best pitching coaches in the country. Many big leaguers work with him in their off seasons such as Clayton Kershaw, Homer Bailey, Tommy Hunter, Clay Buccholz and many more. “Skip is someone that has taught me a lot about pitching and the importance of all the intangibles that go along with it,” said by McCarter.During McCarter’s two year period at Navarro College, he was selected in 2004 by the New York Yankees (28th round) and in 2005 selected by the Washington Nationals (39th round). McCarter decided to opt out and attend the University of Alabama.During McCarter’s time at Alabama, his team won the 2006 Southeastern Conference Title and were Super Regional Finalists that they hosted. McCarter led the SEC in earned run average that year and played alongside a few big leaguers including David Robertson, Wade LeBlanc, Alex Avila, Tommy Hunter, and Matt Downs. McCarter was selected in 2006 by the Boston Red Sox in the 45th round.McCarter again opted out and decided to complete his college playing career at the University of Oklahoma. During his time at OU, his team had a successful season where they were Reginal Finalist. McCarter graduated with a bachelors in Sociology before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008.McCarter was with the Dodgers Organization from 2008 to 2011. He bounced around many affiliates throughout his playing career with the Dodgers. He was successful everywhere he went in the organization. Throughout his time with the Dodgers he had many pitching coaches which included Charley Hough, George Culver, Danny Darwin, Aaron Sele, Chuck Crim, and Rafael Chavez. McCarter was awarded with the Dodger Pride in 2009. “I had an amazing experience playing at the professional level. I learned many things from some of the best teachers in the world,” said McCarter.McCarter achieved his master’s degree in 2015. He is married to his lovely wife Lindsay, and have two sons Roan and Madoc.
