Rojas Notches 2nd Win for NMJC (BSB)
The Thunderbirds defeated Butler CC 12-4 in seven innings to run rule the Grizzlies and sweep the series on Sunday, Feb. 22.
The T-Birds plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning highlighted by RBI doubles from Mekhi Brewer, Javier Diaz, and Casen Savage. Butler scored three runs on a 3-run homer in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. Vaughn Maginn made it 6-3 T-Birds on an RBI double in the bottom half of the third.
The Grizzlies scored a run in the fifth to pull within two, 6-4, but NMJC scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, two runs in bottom of the sixth, and three runs in the bottom of the seventh to run rule Butler 12-4 for a second time this weekend.
Ricardo Rojas moved to 2-1 on the season after starting Sunday going 5.1 innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits. The sophomore also struck out six batters during the victory. Brandon Stewart relieved Rojas, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing no hits.
Center fielder Casen Savage was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and two RBIs. Catcher Vaughn Maginn went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs.
Second baseman Jeter Battles recorded a double and two RBIs. Third baseman Javier Diaz was 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks. Mekhi Brewer batted 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
The T-Birds finished Game 3 with 13 hits and one error. NMJC ended the series with 36 hits on the weekend.
The Thunderbirds move to 9-5 on the year and will play Dodge City CC Friday, Feb. 27 in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. MST. The games will be streamed on YouTube.
