NMJC Baseball Finishes Season with 40 Wins, Ramirez Reaches 100 RBIs
The Thunderbirds closed the season with a 7-3 loss to Weatherford College in the Region V Tournament on Saturday, May 17.
Julius Ramirez put the T-Birds on the board in the first with a solo shot to left. Ramirez also knocked in the second run of the game in the bottom of the third to push the T-Birds ahead 2-0.
The Thunderbirds loaded the bases with one out in the fourth but were unable to capitalize and score a run. Weatherford grabbed its first lead of the game in the fifth scoring three runs to make it 3-2 Coyotes. NMJC loaded the bases for the second straight inning with one out, but Lachlan Maude grounded into a double play to end the inning.
NMJC for the third straight inning loaded the bases in the sixth this time with two outs and Ramirez struck out looking to hold the T-Birds at bay. In the seventh, the Thunderbirds had two runners on with two outs and again couldn't break through.
Weatherford added a run in the eighth to lead 4-2. NMJC had two runners on in eighth via a walk and a second intentional walk to Ramirez. Jorge De Los Santos finally broke through and ended the scoring drought with an RBI single to left field to pull NMJC within a run 4-3 headed into the ninth.
Weatherford hit a 3-run homer off Santana Hernandez to add three insurance runs and take a 7-3 lead in the top of the ninth. NMJC was unable to muster a comeback in the bottom half of the inning as they fell 7-3.
DH Julius Ramirez batted 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBIs, and two walks. Ramirez crossed the 100 RBI mark ending his T-Bird career with 102 RBIs (NJCAA No. 2) and 26 homers (NJCAA No. 2).
First baseman Lane Arroyos went 2-for-3 with a walk. Right fielder Jorge De Los Santos was 1-for-5 with one RBI. Third baseman Omar Reluz went 1-for-3 with a double.
Dominick Maese started for the T-Birds pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing one earned run and four hits. Santana Hernandez pitched for three innings allowing four earned runs and four hits. Issei Yanagisawa relieved Hernandez going 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs or hits.
NMJC ended their season in the second round of the Region V Tournament with a 40-20 (27-9) record. NMJC has won 40 or more games in six straight seasons.
