NMJC split the Friday doubleheader at home against Howard College.
Game 1
The Thunderbirds struggled to hold the Hawks at bay in Game 1 falling 26-18.
The wind was constantly blowing 30 mph on Friday with gusts near 50 mph out to center. The weather affected the defensive ability throughout the game and led to seven homers allowed and three long balls hit by NMJC.
The T-Birds allowed the Hawks to score in six of the seven innings with the third inning being the only scoreless inning of the ball game.
Shortstop Talan Barraza had a career day going 3-for-5 with two homers, a triple, three runs scored, and eight RBIs. Catcher Lachlan Maude also had a solid day batitng 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBIs.
Right fielder Travis Vlasek went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Third baseman Lucian Dixon was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks, and three runs scored.
Starting pitcher Donovan Becerra went 3.1 innings giving up 10 earned runs. Tadum Widner received the loss going just one inning and allowing seven earned runs.
The Thunderbirds gave up 24 hits and finished with 15 hits and two errors.
Game 2
The T-Birds bounced back in Game 2 with a dominant 16-1 win over Howard.
Casen Savage opened up the scoring for NMJC with a 2-run shot to center field. A Lane Arroyos double scored another run to make it 3-0 NMJC after the first. The T-Birds added four runs in the second and five more runs in the third to take a 12-0 lead.
The Hawks got on the board with a solo homer to center in the fourth. A sac fly by Jeter Battles in the bottom of the fourth made it 13-1 NMJC. Julius Ramirez shut the door on the Hawks with a 3-run homer to right field which brought the advantage to 16-1 as NMJC run ruled Howard in Game 2.
Second baseman Jorge De Los Santos was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. DH Julius Ramirez batted 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a homer, and two runs scored.
Center fielder Casen Savage was 2-for-2 with a walk, a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Catcher Lachlan Maude went 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, one run scored, and four RBIs. First baseman Lane Arroyos batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Starting pitcher Brayan Orrantia threw five innings giving up three hits, striking out six while allowing one earned run on a solo homer to center. Orrantia is second in the NJCAA in wins with 10.
The T-Birds recorded 13 hits and one error in the victory.
