T-Bird (BB) Sweeps Western Texas
The cold rain was a constant on Friday, but it did not put a damper on the T-Birds four-game sweep of Western Texas.
Game 3
The T-Birds held on to a 4-3 win in Game 3 over Western Texas College.
Lane Arroyos drove in the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning with a double to center field.
Pinch hitter Lucian Dixon doubled to left field to score a run in the fourth. Julius Ramirez added another RBI with a sac fly to left to make the score 4-0 after four. NMJC was cruising into the sixth inning when Western Texas launched a two out 3-run homer to pull within one run, 4-3.
Tadum Widner came in relief of Becerra in the seventh after Becerra allowed a double to the first batter. Widner settled down the T-Birds and got a groundout, a strikeout, and another groundout to earn the save which preserved the 4-3 win.
Third baseman Lucian Dixon went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. First baseman Lane Arroyos was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Center fielder Casen Savage went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Shortstop Talan Barraza was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
Starting pitcher Donovan Becerra struck out seven over six innings. The sophomore allowed six hits and three earned runs.
Game 4
NMJC defeated Western Texas College 13-7 in Game 4 Friday afternoon to sweep the series 4-0.
The T-Birds fell behind early, allowing two runs in the top of the first. They clawed back in the bottom of the inning putting three runs across on an RBI single by Julius Ramirez and a double by Travis Vlasek that scored two more runs to make the game 3-2 NMJC.
Ramirez came back up to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and with the bases loaded hit a bases clearing double to make the score 6-3 T-Birds. NMJC scored one more run in the inning on a fielder's choice groundout by Vlasek that brought the lead to 7-3.
An error in the third scored Talan Barraza followed by an RBI single by Ramirez added to the onslaught at 9-2 after three.
The Westerners made it interesting in the sixth inning when they scored five runs to make the score 9-7 NMJC.
Vlasek drove in two runs on an RBI double putting the Thunderbirds in front 11-7 in the seventh. Casen Savage scored in the bottom of the ninth on an error and Julius Ramirez added his sixth RBI of the day with a double to center.
The game was called after eight innings due to weather with NMJC prevailing 13-7.
The Thunderbirds are tied with Odessa College and Midland College at 18-2 in the WJCAC standings.
Julius Ramirez went 4-for-5 with six RBIs, two doubles, and three runs scored. Ramirez is first in the NJCAA in RBIs with 69 and T-4 in homers with 16.
Right fielder Travis Vlasek went 3-for-5 for with five RBIs. Casen Savage was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jorge De Los Santos scored three runs.
Brayan Orrantia pitched five innings allowing four hits, striking out five, and giving up two earned. Brandon Stewart earned the save in relief and went 2.1 innings.
NMJC improves to 28-11 (18-2) and will play Amarillo College in a doubleheader at Wayland Baptist University Friday, April 11 starting at 11 a.m. CDT.
