T-Birds sweep Luna, move into 2nd in WJCAC
NMJC completes regular season Saturday against Luna
LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The New Mexico Junior College baseball team swept Luna Community College 13-2 and 19-11 Friday in Las Vegas, N.M., to move into second place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference – a game ahead of Midland College and two games behind Howard College with two games left.
In the first game NMJC (37-17 overall, 24-10 WJCAC) crushed six home runs to beat Luna (17-32, 12-22) in five innings. Austin Botello and Angel Vega each hit two home runs while Jacy Cave and Branden Grieger also went deep. Cave led the T-Birds with four RBI.
Mark Simon picked up the win for NMJC, going three innings and giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Colby Price pitched a scoreless final two innings.
In the second game NMJC built an 18-4 lead on Luna by the top of the fifth before Luna scored seven in the bottom of the inning to keep the game from avoiding the run rule.
Vega homered again in game two while Terance Barela also went deep while going 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
Botello went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a triple while Luis Pintor, Travon Benton, Jeff Deimling and Zak Felix also had two hits apiece.
Jean-Francois Dionne got the win, going four innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
NMJC and Luna conclude the series Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M.
