No. 19 T-Birds split four-game set with Lamar
No team won a game by more than two runs in series
HOBBS, N.M. — The No. 19 New Mexico Junior College baseball team split its season-opening four-game series with Lamar Community College on Sunday and Monday at Ray Birmingham Thunderbird Field.
The Thunderbirds won game one of each doubleheader – winning 6-5 Sunday and 4-3 Monday – while dropping the second game each day, 5-3 and 14-13, respectively.
In the opening game of the season Sunday, NMJC's Austin Botello singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to give the T-Birds a 6-5 advantage.
NMJC held on from there with La Cueva grad Brett Worthen picking up the save in the seventh – giving up a hit and picking up a strikeout.
Roberto Delgado picked up the win in relief, pitching a perfect sixth inning.Lubbock Monterey grad Travon Benton went 2-for-4 in the game with a stolen base, an RBI and a run while fellow Monterey grad Zac Sanders went 2-for-2.
As for game two Sunday, Jean-Francois Dionne picked up the loss for NMJC after going 3 1/3 and giving up two runs on six hits with a walk and no strikeouts.
Zak Felix went 1-for-4 with a two-run single while Benton was 1-for-3 with a triple.
In Monday's opening game – a 4-3 NMJC victory – sophomore left-hander Colby Price picked up the win, going four innings and giving up no runs on two hits with four strikeouts, three hit batters and two walks. Worthen picked up his second save of the series, racking up two more strikeouts in an inning of work.
Angel Vega went 1-for-3 with three RBI for the T-Birds, Terance Barela was 2-for-2 while Felix walked three times, scored two runs and added a stolen base.
In the series finale, each team struggled to get the other out as Lamar won the slugfest 14-13.
Freshman Blake Walden got the loss for NMJC, going 3 1/3 innings and giving up 10 runs on 14 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Sanders was 3-for-3 for NMJC with a home run, four RBI, three runs and a stolen base, Jacy Cave went 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs, Vega was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, RBI and two runs while Daniel Herrera went 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI.
NMJC returns to action Friday when it travel to Houston to participate in the San Jac Tournament of Champions. The T-Birds open with LSU-Eunice 9 a.m. Friday.
